Take a workshop with Judith and learn 3-D surface effects with nuno felting and dye watercolour hand-painting techniques. If you are new to felting, check out the beginner-friendly workshops listed below and make a spectacular first felted creation. If you are an experienced felter and wish to take your feltmaking to a higher level, these are the classes to take! As a bonus, the fabulous and much-loved "No Roll Method" is featured in Judith's workshops. 

Nuno felt results from the union of wool fibre with, in this case, silk fabric. During the felting process, wool fibres migrate and tangle with the fabric weave, as well as “capture” any other fibre or fabric embellishments placed on the surface. Be amazed as a loose assemblage of fluffy wool fibres and rivers of silk fibre and fabric transform into a sumptuous and shimmering new fabric. This exquisite new fabric is durable, yet lightweight and sheer, and drapes beautifully.

Workshop Possibilities

3-D Nuno Felted Watercolour Scarf  or Wrap

Create a one-of-a-kind scarf or wrap featuring 3-D surface designs!  Using lustrous fibres, fabrics and hand-spun silk, you will create, rosettes, blossoms, abstract ruffles, “corkscrew” fringe, silk “brocade,” and many other techniques to achieve dramatic and shimmering 3-D texture. Instruction in the use of resists and the much-loved “No Roll” method will be included.

Next, using fabric dye, you will hand-paint colour directly onto your felted piece to enhance the inherent beauty of nuno felt with a spectacular watercolour effect. Be prepared to be amazed as the colours flow and combine to create new colours and subtle transitions. Learn dye formulation, colour mixing, heat setting of dyes, plus proper finishing techniques which result in durable and long-lasting felt. Take home a wearable work of art!

Explorations in 3D Watercolour Nuno Felt

Immerse yourself in 3 days of play with fibre and colour! Design a stunning hand-painted nuno felted wearable work of art of your own, such as a scarf, wrap, vest, or chemise. Or, make a unique journal or pillow cover, or several pieces of fibre art jewelry. Learn 3-dimensional surface effects and paint your piece as if it were a watercolour!

Using lustrous fibres, fabrics and hand-spun silk, you will create, rosettes, blossoms, abstract ruffles, “corkscrew” fringe, silk “brocade,” and many other techniques to achieve dramatic and shimmering 3-D texture. Capture glass, gemstone or pearl beads for added sparkle. Instruction in the use of resists and the much-loved “No Roll” method will be included.

Next, using fabric dye, you will hand-paint colour directly onto your felted piece to enhance the inherent beauty of nuno felt with a spectacular watercolour effect. Be prepared to be amazed as the colours flow and combine to create new colours and subtle transitions. Learn dye formulation, colour mixing, heat setting of dyes, plus proper finishing techniques which result in durable and long-lasting felt. 

Project complexity to be commensurate with experience level. Instructional handouts included. Take home a finished piece, or two!

Length can be 2 or 3 days (the chemise and larger wraps require 3 days), Beginner-advanced levels.

3-D Nuno Felted Watercolour Chemise, Vest, or Tunic

Create a one-of-a-kind seamless garment, such as a seamless chemise, vest or tunic featuring fabulous 3-dimensional surface effects! Using lustrous fibres, fabrics and hand-spun silk, you will create, rosettes, blossoms, abstract ruffles, “corkscrew” fringe, silk “brocade,” and many other techniques to achieve dramatic and shimmering 3-D texture. Learn how to create a proportionally enlarged pattern for the best fit, calculate shrinkage, achieve flat seams with no ridges, and learn other specialized felted garment techniques. In addition, learn how to strategically place fibre and use fulling techniques for shaping the garment to fit.

We will discuss how the pattern can be easily transformed into different types of garments. This workshop also features the much-loved “No Roll” method, which replaces laborious traditional hand rolling, leaving more time and energy for creativity. In addition, the much-loved “No Roll” method is included.

Be prepared to be amazed as the colours flow and combine to create new colours and subtle transitions. You will learn a LOT in this workshop. In the end, you will take home a unique and wearable work of art and be equipped with the knowledge to create successful projects going forward.
